Massa Ranghar (a Mughal general) indulged in sacrilege of Darbar Sahib was punished by two Sikh Warriors namely Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtab Singh. This in fact raised the morale of Sikhs hiding in deep forests during 1740. The Mughal rulers were up in arms to finish the Sikhs at any cost. Diwan Lakhpat Rai and Diwan Jaspat Rai, the brother courtiers with Mughal Governor Yahia Khan were more active in finishing the Sikhs. In such a battle with Sikhs near Gujranwala, Jaswant Rai got killed. Greatly irritated over his brother death Lakhpat Rai used all means to capture Sikhs, brought them at Lahore, brutally tortured and done to death at the place known as Gurudwara Shaheed Ganz Sahib). Sensing the trouble and their power Sikhs slipped to slippery dense forests (Chhamb) of river Beas belt starting from kahnuwan.
Lakhpat Rai was accompanied with big army of Mughals, he surrounded the whole area. Sikhs resisted for some time and then moved towards river belt of Beas. The Mughal forces set the forest on fire to stop Sikhs from fleeing. Everywhere there was a fierce battle. Nearly 7000 Sikhs martyred and 3000 were captured by Mughal army. The captured Sikhs were brought to Lahore, paraded in streets and then done to death.
The massacre of Sikhs at Kahnuwan is known as Smaller Holocaust (Chhota Ghallughara).
At Kahnuwan (Gurdaspur) a Gurudwara has been established by Sikh Sangat and a memorial raised by Punjab Govt.
