The Gurudwara Sri Darbar Sahib Bhagat Namdev Ji, also called Gurudwara Sri Tapiana Sahib, is located in Ghoman and is connected to the town's founder, Bhagat Namdev (1270–1350).
On October 29, 1270, Bhagat Namdev Ji was born in the Maharashtra village of Naras-Vamani, in the Satara district (now known as Narsi Namdev). A spiritual man named Namdev traveled to Punjab from Maharashtra and brought a message of love to the locals there.
Bhagat Namdev prayed to God here for 10-20 years, doing many miraculous deeds. There is an old Thara Sahib and a statue of Bhagat Namdev. The Parkash of Guru Granth Sahib is carried out in the Gurudwara.
The Guru Granth Sahib recognizes many bhagats of the Bhakti movement of medieval India. Kabir, Farid, Namdev are some of the bhagats belonging to this movement which swept across the North India from 1100 AD till 1600 AD.
When Guru Arjan Dev Ji compiled first Aad Guru Granth Sahib, he decided to give recognition to the bhagats of Bhakti movement, which is why Guru Granth Sahib contains verses of such bhagats. In some cases the Guru Granth Sahib is the only voice that remained for such bhagats over the years.
Namdev visited numerous centres of pilgrimage so that he could share with the maximum number of people the limitless power of God as he realised it. Finally, he came to Punjab, accompanied by Gian Dev. Bhagat Namdev founded the village of Ghoman, in Gurdaspur district, and made it his dwelling place. He stayed here for about 10-20 years, and it was here that he breathed his last in 1350 AD. Most of Namdev's hymns that are included in the Guru Granth Sahib were possibly composed here; the language of these is either Punjabi, or greatly influenced by it.
Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgharia erected a memorial at Ghoman in remembrance of Namdev's work. A large fair is held there in January (2 Magh) every year. Sada Kaur also had a sarovar dug there. Now many more elegant buildings have come up at that place, constructed by his followers. Several organisations have engaged in spreading Namdev's spiritual and humanitarian message to the peoples.
